Manchester United’s quarter final clash with Barcelona on Wednesday night has most pundits and fans alike claiming that the e Devils have no chance against Lionel Messi and company. On the balance of play, it really does seem so but this article will go into explaining just why Manchester United could cause a shock and eliminate Barcelona.

Barcelona are the current La Liga leaders and have won the Spanish title in 8 of the last 11 campaigns. The last time they won the European Cup however was 4 years ago when they beat Juventus 3-1 to cap a historic season where they also won the League and the Spanish Copa Del Rey.

In that final against Juventus something else happened: Xai Hernandez played his last game for the club and left for Qatar to start a new chapter. Xavi was undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation and together with Andres Iniesta and Lione Messi formed football’s most devastating trio.

While Barcelona coped well in domestic competitions without their midfield general, they struggled in Europe and have not made it past the quarter finals of the Champions League since ever since Xavi played his last match against Juventus. In one match against PSG in the round of 16 back in 2016, Barcelona lost 4-0 away in what will go down as their worst European night in 20 years and had to rely on a PSG collapse plus some dodgy penalties to ultimately advance.

Last season, the Catalans let a 3 goal lead escape them and were eventually knocked out by Roma despite leading 4-1 from the first leg. Iniesta and Messi have never filled the Xavi shaped hole in the team and it is even more difficult that Messi has to fill it all by himself now that Iniesta is gone too!

Manchester United may not be in their best shape but let no one fool you, neither are Barcelona! They not been without their midfield general in Europe and if Manchester United show a bit of concern, they could end up proving this theory right especially at Old Trafford.
