He’s a leader… Lacazette comes to the defence of Ozil as they meet Napoli

Arsenal failed to seal their top three position over the weekend in their derby against Everton in a match that saw German star, Mesut Ozil substituted and getting furious

The midfielder was not happy after the incident and to show it he was seen throwing his jacket to the coaches when they were having an argument at the touchline but his teammate Lacazette has come to his defence.

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil came under fire at the weekend for appearing to throw his jacket towards Everton manager Marco Silva during a late touchline altercation.

The German was clearly angered after a frustrating afternoon which dented the Gunners’ top four hopes and reacted after he had already been substituted.

Ozil started the game as captain but failed to impress in a lacklustre display by Unai Emery’s side but Alexandre Lacazette has defended his team-mate.

The French striker was asked about Ozil in their pre-match press conference before Thursday’s Europa League clash with Napoli.

And he played down the incident, instead praised the role Ozil plays within the dressing room.

“He’s a leader,” Lacazette said. “Sometimes you do something you shouldn’t do.”

Lacazette also made no excuses for their Goodison Park defeat as he backed them to respond in the Europa League to keep their silverware hopes alive.

“Sunday we all played bad,” he commented We didn’t do what the coach asked us.”We still have confidence. We want to win a trophy, we are confident.”

Emery, meanwhile, diverted attention elsewhere when asked about Sunday’s Ozil incident.

Asked directly about the German, Emery replied: “Our focus is the match, taking confidence and being together, being calm when bad results come.

“Three months ago this moment like we are now. We are on a good way but each match now is going to be very important.

“We are with our target, we know it is going to be very difficult. The best thing for us is to be together and strong, calm and with clear focus.”
