Crime, Graft top Mutyambai’s priority areas as he takes office

On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta lauded the newest sheriff in town, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.

He urged him to work closely with his colleagues and members of the National Police Service to deliver on the mandate of the service in line with its motto “Utumishi kwa Wote”, so as to achieve the country’s social and economic objectives

Mutyambai was sworn in on Monday at the Supreme Court, becoming the third Inspector General of Police, succeeding Joseph Boinnet whose four-year term came to an end.

The fight against terrorism, organised crime, corruption and cattle-rustling are among the priority areas the incoming Inspector-General of Police will seek to address during his four-year tenure in office.

Regarding the ongoing fight against corruption, Mr Mutyambai said the National Police Service will play its enforcement role in a non-partisan manner, guided by high fidelity to the law.

But Mr Mutyambai said this can only be achieved through enhanced collaboration between various agencies in the security and justice sector.

“We will deepen our relationship with our partner security agencies and the criminal justice system to make sure that as we enforce the law, those who break it are served justice, in a fair manner,” Mr Mutyambai said.

Speaking at the Supreme Court building, Nairobi, after being sworn in by Chief Justice David Maraga, he also challenged the police to eliminate corruption from within, adding that he will initiate a system that enhances accountability and responsibility within the force.

The Independent Internal Affairs Unit will be expanded and enhanced to enable it investigate corruption cases within the police force.
