Lack of HIV Post Counselling drives a man to take his own life

Two empty tins of ARV drugs, an empty 500ml bottle of insecticide and an empty five-litre container smelling of insecticide were found next to this corpse. Mr Mesha worked in the laundry department at a city hotel is said to have taken all the HIV drugs plus antibiotics. and washed them down with 5 litres of pesticide.

Mr Mesha had earlier on called his sister and informed her that he was heading to Mbagathi Hospital for a check-up as was experiencing severe chest pains.

However, several hours later, test results revealed that his ailments were all linked to the HIV virus, a diagnosis that seemingly caught him off-guard, throwing him on a downward spiral.

He was reportedly given 2-month’s worth of ARV’s prescription after which he switched his phone off and hurriedly headed home, hell-bent on taking his own life. Mesha’s family have laid the blame squarely at the hospital for what they claim to be a failure to counsel him. On the other hand, the hospital allegedly claimed that they couldn’t verify the details of the suicide victim.
