Dr. Oburu’s move to save baby brother Raila from jaws of Uhuru’s handshake

The March 9, 2018 Handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga that was reportedly meant to quell tension between the two sides could be facing an acid test as critics try to taint the intentions of the deal.

One such critic is Raila’s elder brother, Dr. Oburu Odinga.

According to local media reports, Oburu who is a member of the East African Assembly, explained that Raila would soil his stance against corruption if he continued to support the Jubilee administration.

Oburu Oginga: @RailaOdinga should withdraw his support for President Uhuru Kenyatta and distance himself from the handshake.

As things stand in, he risks soiling his well fought anti-graft credentials and also loose his grounds to DP Ruto

According to him, Uhuru has not been effective in the fight against corruption and this does not augur well with Raila.

“My brother Raila has put vigour in the fight against corruption because President Uhuru is committed. But in case he gets distracted by suspects to the extent of backing down, Raila would simply walk out of the Handshake,” said Oburu.

Oburu’s stance is likely to kick up a storm and subject the Handshake to scrutiny. Political commentator Herman Manyora termed the statement as “very serious” as it puts the Handshake to test.

“The message being sent by Oburu is that his brother is looking for an exit strategy from the union between him and the President,” said the University of Nairobi don.

Oburu went on to explain that he could not force Raila to reconsider his working relationship with Uhuru. 

“I can only advise him but if he refuses, it’s up to him. But he needs to be careful with his image,” Oburu explained. 

He stated that Raila should not stay in an environment where corruption was condoned.

Since then, his sentiments have sparked reactions from a section of Kenyans on Twitter under the hashtag #DrOburuSaveUs:
