Uhuru-Raila 2017 election violence now reviewed as MCA is charged with ethnic hatred

Even as the handshake was purported to be a new beginning, this has not quite been the case for a Makueni Member of County Assembly who on Monday appeared before court to explain her actions during the 2017 post election violence.

The Wiper nominated MCA Mbula Mutula is alleged to have put up a post on Facebook, spreading ethnic hatred, and thereby contravening the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

She was taken to Makueni Law Courts, and appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate James Mwaniki. The court heard that on November 19, 2017, while at an unknown place, Mutula, through her Facebook account, wrote that an outlawed militant group was killing Opposition supporters.

She also wrote that the country’s top leaders were happy about it. The post also made reference to a certain tribe that she said was “cursed”. She urged Kenyans to boycott businesses owned by the tribe’s people. Prosecutors interpreted the post to have the possibility of stirring ethnic hatred against the tribe she mentioned.

Ms Mutula however denied the charges.

She was released on a Sh800,000 bond or a cash bail of Sh400,000.

The case will be mentioned on 15 April.
