Did Manchester United make a mistake by awarding Ole Gunnar a permanent contract?

Manchester United’s mini revival under their new manager took good humbling on Tuesday away at Wolves in the English Premier League. Ole Gunnar’s side took the lead early on through Scott McTominay’s low strike from 22 yards but the hosts equalized 12 minutes later as Diogo Jota coolly finished from a Raul Jimenez pass. Ashley Young was sent off in the second half and Wolves make use of their numerical advantage to head in front with minutes to play and held on for the win, their second against Manchester United in the space of two months!

Manchester United’s struggles since the departure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson keep on piling on despite changes in the coaching and playing personnel. David Moyes did not last a season after he was appointed as Ferguson’s successor while Louis Van Gaal only lasted two seasons despite winning the FA Cup in his second season. Jose Mourinho was hired next but despite winning the league cup and the Europa League in his first season, he won nothing the following season and was fired in halfway through the third season.

Next came Ole Gunnar who impressed in his first ten matches as caretaker manager, earning him a permanent three year deal at Old Trafford. Could this be Manchester United’s main problem? Should they have awarded the club legend a contract that fast despite him not being tested well enough in the course of the season?

The best option would have been to wait for the season to end, assess other options and pick their best candidate based on reputation and results, instead, the Manchester United hierarchy opted for Ole Gunnar despite him not been proven at the highest level as a manager. Until Manchester United’s decision makers start making decisions based on football first and not for commercial reasons, they will continue to struggle on the pitch.

Ole Gunnar might still turn things around and qualify for next season’s Champions League but it still feels very unlikely that he has the players to do so. Changes are still needed at Old Trafford, swift and fast!
