Kenyatta National Hospital board of management is set to release 250 patients held over fee arrears after public outcry.

In the last few weeks there has been a public discussion on the topic of discharge of patients from the hospitals and the financial strain in several hospitals nationally.

The function will be held at Administration Block Parking Area today at 2.00pm where the Board will address the media.

There were reports of detention of patients at the facility for their inability to pay hospital bills.

Some 387 bodies were also detained at the hospital mortuary for non-payment of bills.

The Health ministry said the relatives owe KNH a total of Sh5.9 million Principal Secretary Susan Mochache admitted 300 patients are being detained in various hospitals for non-payment of medical bills.

The PS, who was before the National Assembly Health Committee yesterday, said a few other public and private hospitals were holding bodies over bills.

Pandya Hospital, a private hospital in Mombasa, is detaining three bodies for non-payment of Sh2.5 million while Tabaka Mission Hospital has one body over Sh68,850 debt.

Mochache said 300 patients are being detained in various hospitals for non-payment of medical bills.

KNH tops the list with 184 patients, followed by Kakamega County Referral Hospital with 56.

Kenyatta National Hospital has been in deep financial trouble after the National Hospital Insurance Fund failed to pay Sh800 million it owes the giant medical institution.

The hospital operations are already in peril, putting the lives of thousands of patients, who depend on the facility, at risk with hundreds already being turned away as the financial crisis threatens to get out of control.

Few weeks ago,the hospital laid off five doctors, and a number of casual workers because of the financial strain brought about by the delayed payment.

Some medical and food suppliers have stopped supplying the facility because of accumulated debt, some dating back to October last year.

The hospital management blamed the National Hospital Insurance Fund for not clearing the Sh800 million, while the Prisons Department owes close to Sh200 million.

Kenyans are now eager waiting whether the ministry will release the bodies detained in mortuaries across the Country.
