MIGORI: Alshabaab new terror route?

Focus has turned on the porous Migori- Tanzania border after Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU)officers in Eldoret nabbed two men in possession of dangerous explosives.

The two, a boda-boda operator and his client were confronted by curious police officers who demanded to know what their suspicious luggage was.

Upon conducting a a quick search, the officers were shocked to find explosive-making equipment and substances.

Detention in Eldoret

Eldoret Court Magistrate detained the duo, pending conclusive investigations by sleuths.

The two, Jim Odhiambo and Kennedy Omondi, had 200 explosive materials on them.

In her ruling, Eldoret Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Menya ordered that they be detained at Eldoret West Police Station in order to allow police complete investigations.

Appearing before the court, the prosecutor requested for more time since the case had technicalities and could not be completed on time.

Threat to national security

He further argued that when released, the two posed a threat to national security.

He also revealed that as part of the investigations, he intended to go to Migori where the consignment allegedly originated from and promised to make more arrests.

“Due to the required comprehensive detailed examination of the said materials and analysis of their mobile data at ATPU ICT lab in Nairobi, I ask for 10 days to complete investigations.

“I also need to travel to Migori County where the consignment is suspected to have originated from with a view of arresting more suspects linked to these explosives,” stated the officer.

The suspects never objected to any of the demands by the prosecutor.

The case is set for mention on April 5, 2019.
