Health ministry confirms 1,009 people with Ebola and why the pandemic keeps increasing by the day

DRC Congo Health Ministry has revealed the rapid increase in Ebola cases, reporting that 1,009 people have so far contracted the fatal illness.

The pandemic has been recorded as the world’s second worst ever outbreak, after the West African epidemic of the same disease in 2013-2016 which claimed 11,000 lives.

Recent reports of the death toll were at 629 people.

Containing the spread of the disease has however been a challenge despite health workers efforts.

Five Ebola centers have been attacked since last month, sometimes by armed assailants. The violence led French medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) to suspend its activities at the epicenter of the outbreak last month.

Moreover, public mistrust and rampant insecurity in the parts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where Ebola has struck have hampered the response, complicating the fight against it.
