Rwandan government to rebury over 40,000 genocide victims

Rwanda experienced the worst genocide in its history in 1994 where over a million people were killed.

The government has been making arrangements to honor and give last respect to those who lost their lives.

Genocide survivors and authorities in Ngoma District will on May 26, put remains of over 40,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi to their decent final resting place, following the completion of the Rukumberi Genocide Memorial.

May 26 will also be the official commemoration day at the district level in Ngoma.

The new memorial, officials say, will accommodate remains from mainly the old site that is dilapidated while others will be taken from a nearby Pentecostal church.

The first phase which is in this year’s performance contracts of the district involves constructing new mass graves and reburying the bodies.

The remains have been exhumed and are currently being prepared for reburial. The new graves have capacity for 45,000 bodies.

Rwanda has, however, resolved the conflicts within the two tribes and are now living as a single tribe and with one language.

Tribalism in Rwanda is a tale told in pictures and memorial homes and one can land into big trouble if mention the name Hutu or Tutsi.
