Machakos County takes up free seeds distribution program for food security

Earlier today, Machakos county governor Alfred Mutua joined by the MCA for Mumbuni North, Hon. Paul Museku, and his  Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Urbanus Musyoka begun the distribution of seeds to the farmers of Machakos County at Ivumbuni village, Mumbuni North Ward.

Over 40 tonnes of seeds will be distributed across the County with a special bias towards the less privileged and orphans in every ward.

The seed distribution project is part of the county’s extensive agricultural program for food security in Machakos County, to ensure that they  no longer feature in the list of Counties receiving food aid (mwolyo) from donors or the National government.

Other Interventions that the county has invested in include providing subsidized fertilizers, tilling tractors for every ward, digging and equipping boreholes, quality extension services to the farmers, distribution of day old chicks and the green house program.

The Machakos Governor noted that the plan to ensure Kenyans don’t die from hunger must be strategic by focusing more and empowering the poor.

“ They are the most vulnerable especially during times of drought and famine.” He said

Mutua believes that Machakos is a true testament that with proper planning, even the driest parts of the Country can survive harsh climate.

He exuded confidence saying that if it t has been done in Israel and they have taken it up in Machakos then it can be replicated in other arid areas.

This free distribution comes at a time when some parts of the county’s are stricken with famine.

With this move, the Governor believes that it will go a long way in ensuring that the residents have a food supply from the products of their farms.
