Kenya To the World: Why Murang’a Senator was Nominated for Ksh. 50 Million Global Award

Kenya hit the headlines yet again as Murang’a Senator, Irungu Kang’ata, has been shortlisted in an exclusive list comprising of other exemplary African leaders who will battle it out for the Tällberg/Eliasson Global Leadership Prize.

The overall winner is set to bag a Ksh.50 million grand prize, at the end of the voting and selection phase slated for August 2019.

Senator Kang’ata revealed that he was elated and humbled by the global recognition, adding that it was quite fulfilling.

“I’m glad that there is a person somewhere who recognises one’s efforts to the society even as we help our voters to uplift their living standards,” he divulged to the local papers.

The Tallberg foundation indicated that the Senator was selected due to his relentless efforts in community empowerment programmes and his inspirational leadership journey.

Among the numerous community development projects undertaken by the Senator is the regular medical camps he organizes using his own funds which have changed numerous lives.

The Murang’a Senator revealed that if he emerged the winner, he would use the prize money to further his community empowerment projects.

“Should I emerge victorious, the prize will address various challenges affecting Murang’a as a county and will I increase mobile clinics,” he affirmed.

The Tallberg Foundation, in a statement, highlighted that the voting process was currently underway, and set to close on April 12, 2019.

The avid reggae music lover is also attributed to several water projects such as Kaigwa borehole in Gaturi, piping projects in Mirira, Ndikwe among numerous other areas.

“The jury comprised of international eminent experts from various bodies including a global body of parliamentarians who will do the final selection and results announced in August 2019,” read an excerpt of their statement.
