Government embarks on another Billion shilling water project

The government has announced plans to finance a Ksh 7 billion water project in Tana River and Lamu counties with a view to ending perennial water shortages in the two counties.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the governments of Kenya and Belgium had entered into an agreement to fund the Garsen-Lamu water project.

Speaking in Hola Town, Tana River County, during celebrations to mark the World Water Day Wamalwa said a delegation of national and county government officials were in Belgium recently to seal the deal.

He, however, did not give the timelines of the project, which he said was aimed at solving the water crises that perennially hit the two counties, especially during drought.

He said that the national government would spend a total of 5 million shillings in each of the 13 counties severely affected by drought – to do water tracking with a view of providing clean and safe drinking water to residents.

He asked Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) in the affected counties to cooperate with their county executive committees to approve supplementary budgets to allow allocation of more funds towards water tracking and relief food distribution.

Accompanying the  CS was  Chief Administrative Secretary  Devolution is Ministry, Hussein Dado,  who said the government through the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) had constructed a water pan in Titila area of Wayu ward, while the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation was doing another project in Assa.
