With a new permanent manager in charge, United are expected to spend big this summer. The striker spot has caused controversy over the past 12 months at Old Trafford. While Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are enjoying strong seasons, experienced heads Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku have struggled to keep up.Red Devils boss Ed Woodward is widely expected to hand the new United boss a bumper budget to improve his squad.
And one player who has been linked with a big-money move to Manchester is Benfica prospect Joao Felix. However, he could be on his way to the blue side of the city, with the Sky Blues weighing up a bid worth more than £100m to secure his services. The 19-year-old versatile forward is enjoying a fantastic debut season with the first-team, having been promoted last summer. The former Porto youth player has been dubbed the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’, even earning a recent call-up to the senior Portugal team.
And it seems his recent success has caught the eye of several clubs across Europe, including the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. Felix’s release clause is currently set at around £103m.And Benfica are unlikely to let the teenager leave for any less than they have to, meaning the Portuguese would become the most expensive player in Premier League history.Portuguese publication Correio da Manha suggest City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, has regularly visited the Estádio da Luz to watch Felix. And the Barcelona legend has clearly been impressed with what he has seen.
However, City are not keen on paying the full amount up front, and are keen to add in several performance bonuses should Felix struggle at the Etihad. The Portugal U21 international has scored 10 goals in just 18 appearances in the league, eight of those coming in 2019. Felix started the season as a winger, but has enjoyed far more success since getting the nod to play up front for the second half of the season.
