A scholarship is something worth celebrating. Given that education is becoming expensive in Kenya Safaricom’s efforts to sponsor education for less-fortune students deserves a bigger applaud.

Safaricom has handed over Ksh.4.7 million worth scholarships to benefit 100 secondary school students from disadvantaged backgrounds across the country.

The telco, through its foundation collaborated with the Ministry of Education for this initiative following Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed’s request on behalf of the ministry in line with government commitment to achieve 100% transition of students from primary to secondary schools.

“Access to quality education is hampered by financial constraints facing most parents countrywide. In an effort to remedy this, we are seeking support from various partners to ensure that all students who sat for their KCPE 2018 exams transition to secondary schools,” Amb. Mohamed said.

Earlier this year, Safaricom offered to support another 100 students from disadvantaged backgrounds who joined form one in various schools across the country. As part of Ndoto Zetu initiative, the telco has committed to sponsoring 18 girls throughout their secondary school education.

Additionally, through the M-PESA Foundation Academy, Safaricom is supporting 700 students in Form 1 to 4 with full scholarships.

“Supporting education is a commitment we have made as part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals which we subscribe to. We believe that we should not leave anyone behind in access to quality education, ensuring inclusive and equitable opportunities for all; transforming lives one student at a time,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Chief Customer Officer, Safaricom.

Ndoto Zetu is a Community Social Investment initiative launched in January this year to support dreams Kenyans have for their communities. Safaricom will fulfill 500 dreams across the country. So far, 100 dreams have been fulfilled.
