The drought has hit atleast 12 counties. The affected counties include Turkana, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Mandera, Kilifi, Tana River, Makueni, West Pokot, Kajiado, Kwale and Wajir.

MCAs led by Majority Chief Whip Reuben Chepsongol have urged the government to urgently distribute food.

Over 1000 people including pupils are in dire need of food in the drought stricken Baringo North.

“The Government should not see hunger in Baringo as lies but seek to save lives and avoid extra deaths,” Chepsongol said.

He further claimed that some communities from Baringo North had been left out in the food distribution program and called for impartiality.

drought looms in Pokot as rains fail again

Their sentiment comes barely a day after 75-year-old man succumbed to hunger pangs in Barketiew village, Saimo Kipsaraman ward.

The number of those who have died now stands at 21.

Reports indicate that about 1 million people are facing starvation and numbers are expected to rise.

Deputy President William Ruto said: “There is a lot of fake news around what is happening in Kenya. For example, we were told the other day that 11 people had died that is not true from where I sit and from all professionals that we have.”
