The weatherman has revealed that a tropical cyclone known as ‘IDAI’
that has hit Mozambique and Zimbabwe channels for a number of days has delayed the upward movement of northward rain bearing tropical convergence, hence delaying rains in the region.

“The cyclone has significantly reduced moisture influx into the country and this has led to the continued sunny and dry weather conditions over the better part of the country,” said the meteorological department in its latest update.

The department also warned of possibilities of more tropical cyclones in the South-West Indian Ocean Basin which may delay further the onset of long rains over the eastern region of the country.

The rains in April are expected to be near-normal to above-normal rainfall over most parts of the country, more so in western Kenya, central Rift Valley, Northern Kenya (Marsabit, Moyale) and the central highlands including Nairobi.

Intense Tropical Cyclone Idai is the strongest tropical cyclone to strike Mozambique since Jokwe in 2008 and the deadliest tropical cyclone worldwide in 2019.

So far, the cyclone has killed over 200 people from the two countries
