Sarri speaks of one problem with his players

Sarri, whose side failed to threaten a comeback after going behind, added: ‘It is a big limit for is because we lost a similar match in Wolverhampton. This was really, really important for us. Now we have one less opportunity but I think we have to fight to defend those opportunities.’

A failure to get to grips with ‘Sarri-ball’ has come alongside an over reliance on Eden Hazard to provide the goals.

Sarri ditched Alvaro Morata in January and brought in Gonzalo Higuain in an effort to bolster the Blues’ attacking prowess.

But Higuain’s arrival has done little to transform this side which at times has looked rudderless this season.

Maurizio Sarri accused his side of switching off mentally as Chelsea provided Everton’s first top-six scalp in more than two years, the Italian admitting that he is worried about reaching the top four if he cannot rectify the problem.

“We played the best first half of the season. We could’ve scored 4 or 5 times. It’s very strange.”

“At the moment this is our limit, I think,” the Chelsea manager said after a 2-0 defeat at Goodison. “In my opinion the first 45 minutes were the best we have played all season, then in the second half we stopped playing. We forgot how to defend, forgot how to counterattack and that is a problem for

Sarri himself has already admitted he is struggling to motivate his players.

And the Blues are in no position to sell half the squad and rebuild under Sarri now they have a transfer ban hanging over them.

The ban, which runs for the next two transfer windows, means Sarri must work with what he’s got – plus Christian Pulisic in the summer – between now and summer 2020.

But the manager may not be given that much time to sort out the issue.

Owner Abramovich is well known for his willingness to sack managers in an instant.

Roberto Di Matteo and Jose Mourinho both lasted only a short time into a season, having won major trophies in the previous campaign.

If Sarri felt embattled, Marco Silva was breathing easier after the best day of his Everton career. The last time the club had celebrated such a success was when they skewered Manchester City 4-0 in January 2017. It was the perfect response to a desperate result at Newcastle last weekend.

‘To be honest, I didn’t know those numbers before the match,’ said Silva, who saw the points made safe when Gylfi Sigurdsson added a second. ‘It’s not a normal thing for a club like us, not winning so many times against strong sides.

‘But for our quality as a club how big we are as a club, it’s something that can’t happen again. It’s up to us to work together for it to be more normal for us to beat these strong sides.’

Chelsea manager Sarri is understood to be under pressure in west London after a disappointing first season in charge.

The Blues are struggling to land a top-four finish in the Premier League and look set to go without a trophy this season – unless they win the Europa League.

Former Napoli boss Sarri was only appointed back in the summer, when Chelsea paid £4.4m to acquire him.

They also sacked Antonio Conte at an estimated cost of £9m.
