Prince Charles is determined not to repeat ‘past mistakes’ when Meghan and Harry’s child is born after Kate and William reportedly shut him out with George.

The doting grandfather is said to be ‘laying ground work’ with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex ahead of the royal tot’s imminent arrival, which is thought to be in a few weeks time.

Charles, 70, wants to ‘play a central role in the life of his latest grandchild’ and be as hands-on as possible, reports The Sun.

It was previously reported that when William and Kate’s first child George was born, Charles ‘almost never’ got to see the youngster, who he hoped to become a mentor to.

Royal sources said those who know him would laugh at the idea he would change a nappy or feed George, whereas Kate’s parents adored these duties.

Prince William also previously described his dad as being a “brilliant” grandfather, although he wished he could spend more time with his grandchildren.

In the BBC documentary, Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, he said: “I would like him to have more time with the children.

“Because when he’s there, he’s brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible.”

Charles has also gone on to reveal his adorable relationship as ‘Grandpa Wales’ with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and told one mum at an event last year: “My grandchildren wear me out, I don’t know how you do it.”

And following Louis’s birth, Charles released a sweet message to congratulate his son and daughter-in-law and said: “It is a great joy to have another grandchild, the only trouble is I don’t know how I am going to keep up with them.”

Now with grandchild number four on the way, the heir to the throne is having informal chats over tea and cake with Meghan and Harry at Clarence House to continue to be every inch the doting grandfather.

A friend told The Sun: “He prefers to entertain them in his homes rather than darting into Nottingham Cottage (where Harry and Meghan live) and tripping over their two rescue dogs.”
