The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the killings of five civilians’ who were allegedly shot and killed in Juja, Kiambu County on Tuesday.

In a statement Thursday, IPOA says it will investigate the incident with a view of unravelling the circumstances that led to the fatal shootings.

“On its own motion, and pursuant to its statutory mandate under Section 25(1) of the IPOA Act that requires the Authority to investigate deaths and serious injuries caused by Police action, the IPOA immediately launched independent investigations into the incident with a view of unraveling the circumstances that led to the fatal shootings.” Said the Chair Mrs Anne Makori.

She said if culpability is found, IPOA will ensure the responsible officers face the full force of the law through appropriate criminal and/or disciplinary recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions and other suitable Government Agencies.

It is alleged that on Tuesday evening, police in Juja shot dead five robbers who were allegedly trying to raid Lexo Petrol Station located at Sewage area.

According Juja DCIO Mr. Ali Samatar, the six suspects drove into the Petrol Station in a Touareg Volkswagen vehicle at around 8:30pm and immediately brandished pistols and an AK-47 rifle.

Mr. Samatar said the workers at the petrol station, however, raised an alarm attracting the attention of police officers who were on patrol.

One suspect managed to escape and he is being sought after.

Four firearms including three pistols were recovered.

“They were armed with three homemade pistols and an AK47 rifle. The one with the AK 47 rifle escaped.” Said Juja DCIO Ali Samatar.
