Why Arsenal and Tottenham May Both Lose Newcastle United Defender

According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are ready to battle it out to secure the services of Fabian Schar from Newcastle United.

The same source has also claimed that both North London clubs have scouted the Swiss defender before during his time at FC Basel and are now set to reignite their interest in him this summer.

The 27-year-old has done remarkably well to settle into life in English football since making a switch from Deportivo La Coruna at the start of this campaign. He has been Newcastle’s shining light in defence as he has performed brilliantly under Rafael Benitez’s stewardship this season.

Schar has made 22 appearances for the Magpies this term and has three goals and one assist to his name across all competitions. His record proves that he can be a significant threat at both ends of the pitch. The Swiss talent also has a terrific defensive record this term as he has made 2.4 tackles and 2.6 interceptions per match in the Premier League so far (Stats via Whoscored).

Schar is a no-nonsense defender who is aerially dominant which helps him command his own box with authority and conviction. He can also read the game well and is a threat from set-pieces in the attacking end of the pitch. His incredible defensive contributions and important goals going forward have helped Newcastle steer clear of the relegation zone.

The Magpies are currently occupying the 13th place in the league standings with a 6-point advantage separating them from 18th placed Cardiff City. Benitez will be confident about his team’s chances of avoiding the drop this term but losing one of his best performers from this season in the future will be a massive blow for him. The Tyneside giants cannot afford to let their prized asset leave in the summer as he is one of the most reliable and consistent players at St. James’ Park right now.

Hence, Benitez should do everything in his power to fend off interest from the North London clubs and retain Schar at Newcastle for the long-run. The Swiss defensive ace should believe that he can still grow as a player at the Tyneside club, but when the top clubs come calling, it will be pretty hard for him to resist such a great career opportunity as a player.
