Marcus Rashford explained how he managed to keep a cool head as he waited to take the decisive penalty as Manchester United beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The 21-year-old had to wait over four minutes while referee Damir Skomina checked the video assisted referee to decide whether or not to award United a tie winning penalty.

As the game headed in to the 90th minute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed just one goal to clinch the tie and go through on away goals and the pressure fell on Rashford who stepped up to take the penalty after Presnel Kimpembe’s handball.

It was the first penalty Rashford has scored for United and the England international explained to BT Sport what was going through his mind as he waited to take the deciding penalty kick.

“I think keep a cool head they’re the kind of things I practise every day and I wanted to take it,” Rashford said. “We got the goal and we’re progressing.

“The wait before is probably the hardest thing, but it’s all part of the game, and those moments are what we live for you want to get through those moments and be smiling after.”

United went in to the game as huge underdogs having lost the first leg 2-0 and with 10 first team players out injured but Rashford believes it was team spirit that pushed them through to the quarter finals.

“Everything seemed to be against us,” he said. “But we’re used to surviving in these moments and today proved that one more time, we can still improve of course and we keep pushing.”
