Why Former Man Utd player, Paul Ince believes Recent Lukaku Form ha deferred his Trafford exit

Romelu Lukaku had experienced a hard time since the entourage of interim Manager, Ole Gunnar so much so that he had been used to playing as a substitute a thing he was not used to during Mourinho era, he was also facing a lot of criticism from all over but he looks like he’s gone under a whole make over.

Romelu Lukaku has fought back from the fringes of Manchester United’s squad to shine, having previously looked set for an exit from Old Trafford in the summer, according to Paul Ince.

The former United player believes the Belgium international may have saved his position at the club after his impressive performances in recent matches.

Lukaku has hit a brace in each of United ’s last two Premier League matches, helping the Red Devils rise into the top four, and has carried the mantle of the attacker in the absence of injured players like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

With that trio seemingly established as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice options, Ince believes Lukaku could have been set for a transfer in the summer but the situation has now changed.

“I feel like his form has come in almost by default at the moment. Under Ole he was never going to play, he had Martial , Rashford , Lingard , so just with injuries he’s been allowed to come on and show what he can do,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I did think his days were numbered. I felt that, when you look at the teams like Man City, Liverpool, the way their strike force is with little players, diminutive players, I felt like Ole wanted to go that way.

“As soon as he came in he went with those three with pace and I thought that’s the way he wanted to go. Due to injuries, Lukaku has come in and grabbed his place.”

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright weighed in on the situation by praising Lukaku for the work he has put in to shine once again, silencing the critics who had started to pinpoint the former Everton man as a target.

“He’s grabbed his chance, he’s worked really hard. The way I look at them, Lingard, Rashford and Martial, that is his preferred three. He’s probably pulled them at let them know if everything’s going well, they’re his men,” Wright added.

“Lukaku was a little bit on the periphery, to the point where people said he’s overweight and he doesn’t look fit, but he’s worked very hard on himself the last month and you can see it. He took his shirt off the other day and he looked ripped!

“What he did the other day is what he’s got to focus on. Sometimes it goes into him and it comes off a little bit easier. He’s got to sort that out, he’s got to make it more difficult for teams to get the ball off him.

“What he did, which is going to be vital to him, is he scored two clutch goals for them.”
