Bashir Prepares for His Exit as Protests Intensify

As the common adage goes that “A dying witch speaks out all his secrets”, embattled Sudanese President Omar-El-Bashir is slowly defining his fate of stepping down, it’s possible but unfortunately he’s taking it through a process which is marking it as an installment retirement.

Bashir announced a yearlong a state of emergency last week that saw him dissolving the government in a bid to quell demonstrations which are giving him sleepless nights since last year following his attempts to cling to power with abolish term limits and raise in fuel and bread prices.

As the protests intensify every single day in the capital Khartoum and other cities, the troubled General handed his ranks as chief of the country’s ruling party to his newly appointed deputy Ahmed Harun on Thursday.  “President Omar al-Bashir has transferred his authority as chief of the party to Ahmed Harun,” the ruling National Congress Party said in a statement.

Bashir himself is wanted by the ICC for alleged genocide and war crimes in Darfur, charges he denies. On Thursday, eight protesters were sentenced to jail by emergency courts in Khartoum for participating in un authorized rallies earlier in the day, the tribunals’ first such rulings. Officials say 31 people have died in protest-related violence so far, while Human Rights Watch says at least 51 people have been killed.
