Following the sudden death of Kenya’s veteran musician Chris Kantai, renown rapper Khaligraph Jones has strongly suggested there are other veteran artists who are also battling depression in silence.

“Lets Stop waiting for our pioneers to die so that we can talk about how they are legends and inspired us while they were alive, I know some Artists who paved the way for us who are undergoing through depression right now, Lets help them now” he wrote.

Kantai died at a hospital in Kasarani after reportedly developing breaking complications.

Prior to his death, Kantai had been in and out of rehab after falling into alcoholism after he quietly exited the mainstream music scene. Not much was heard of Kantai in the last decade or so, with the father of one only making minor headlines after being spotted in drinking dens occasionally.

However, after a fairly successful stint at a comeback, Kantai came together with Khaligraph Jones and released the song Ting Badi Malo, which went on to get the crowd buzzing following a possible Kantai comeback.

That comeback would however only be short-lived, as three years after the release of the song, Kantai sadly passed on. As distraught as Khaligraph was about the death, he was also very critical of the media who he claims solely painted Kantai in bad light since his fall from grace.

According to the self-proclaimed OG, Kantai was making effort on his part to battle alcoholism but media only pointed out the gloom-ridden aspects of his career.

“Instead of the media motivating during his (Kantai’s) comeback, they only talked about how miserable he was cause of alcoholism even after he was done with rehab and was fully reformed,” Khaligraph observed.

He went on to suggest that like Kantai, there were other veteran artists who did not necessarily enjoy the aftermath of their success back in the day and were also struggling with their own demons, whichever form they took.

“Lets Stop waiting for our pioneers to die so that we can talk about how they are legends and inspired us while they were alive, I know some Artists who paved the way for us who are undergoing through depression right now, Lets help them now, Rest in Peace Kantai,”

Khaligraph was among tens of other celebrities, including the more contemprary artists who paid tribute to Kantai for the vital role he played in paving way for Kenyan hiphop to thrive.
