Jurgen Klopp has delivered some promising news on the status of injured striker Rhian Brewster.
Brewster, who won the u17 European Championship with England, has been sidelined since January of last year after undergoing surgery on his ankle.
It looked unlikely that Brewster would be back before the end of this season, but Klopp stated in his press conference that a return is still possible.
“Rhian looks good… He’s running a lot outside, but he was out a long time and he’s a young boy. It would be nice for him to have a minute [this season] but it’s not important. I hope Rhian is 100 per cent and completely fine, top shape for the pre-season – that would be my target for him. Whether he will play before the end of the season, I don’t know, we don’t close doors.”
If there is the opportunity for Brewster to play before the end of the season, Klopp could give the youngster a chance, but only if we somehow manage to secure the title with games to spare!
Next term, there’s a danger of Brewster coming under the same kind of pressure as Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi. If the talented striker isn’t given sufficient opportunities in 2019/20, he may look to move abroad, as emphasised by Borussia Monchengladbach’s controversial approaches for him last summer.
Brewster’s performances in the u17 European Championships last year, where he finished as top scorer for the champions, show that he could be a useful option in our squad next season, especially if he responds well to his injury. The summer friendlies are going to be enormous for his chances of regular minutes.
