Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United youngster James Garner reminds him of the club’s former midfielder Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday night as they look to continue their unbeaten run in the Premier League under interim boss Solskjaer.

However, United could be without up to ten players as they face Roy Hodgson’s men and Solskjaer has drafted in a number of youngsters to help beef the first-team squad up.

On the United youngsters Angel Gomes, Garner and Tahith Chong, Solskjaer said: “They’ve been part of our training for a long time now and I’m sure Angel has been successful with England’s under-17s, the 2017 team with Sancho, Foden and Hudson-Odoi, so he’s been a big part of that. I’m definitely sure that if he gets a chance he’ll do well.

“James Garner is a Michael Carrick but 20 years younger, I’m sure he’ll do well and Chongy will be taking people on if he comes on. They’re ready, they’re kids. It’s hard if you’re a defender coming on if you’re 16 or 17 but as an attacker you go out there and express yourself, and there’s your chance. They can win you the game, not lose it for you.”

On the threat from Crystal Palace, Solskjaer added: “They’ve been very, very good. Of course the game against Leicester, that [4-1] win, was impressive.

“The way Roy sets up his teams, we know that. We have to be good on the ball, break them down but we know on the counter-attack with Zaha, Townsend, Batshuayi, Benteke, they’ve got some pace and counter-attacking threat, so we’ve got to be at our best.”
