In the final minutes of extra time, Sarri made the decision to introduce Willy Caballero with penalties looming and Arrizabalaga looking to having picked up muscle cramps. The Spaniard, however, declined to be substituted with his decision leaving Sarri absolutely furious as he walked straight down to the tunnel but rethought his decision and made a comeback.

Caballero saved three penalties in the shootout against Liverpool as City lifted the Capital One Cup under Manuel Pellegrini and Kompany admitted that he was relieved to see Caballero stay on the bench, “I know how good Willy Caballero is on penalties, last time we won it he won it for us so I didn’t want him to come on! It didn’t happen in the end.”

When asked whether he has ever seen something like that in football, Kompany replied, “Of course I have never seen it, I wish I could do it whenever I get subbed. In the end we had that little bit more confidence. Other than [Eden] Hazard we were ready to win it on penalties.”
