Despite Harry Kane return goal, Tottenham missed out on an excellent opportunity to make up ground at the top of the table after they were beaten 2-1 at Turf Moor by Burnley.

Harry Kane scored on his Tottenham return, but the London side’s Premier League title hopes suffered a major setback as they were beaten 2-1 at Burnley.

Burnley went in front soon after half-time when Chris Wood headed home and, although Kane fired in a swift equaliser, struck the decisive blow when Ashley Barnes tapped in late on.

Kane, back from injury, had needed only a quarter of an hour to come close, turning and running into the area before firing a low shot just wide.

Only an outstanding save by Heaton prevented Kane from marking his return in spectacular style early in the second half, the Burnley keeper tipping over a long-range swerver.

And with 57 minutes gone, the home side were ahead, Ashley Westwood’s corner met by Wood, who powered his header in off the bar from six yards.

Mauricio Pochettino was furious at the decision to award the corner, claiming the ball had come off Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick rather than Jan Vertonghen last.

The Spurs coach made a change, striker Fernando Llorente replacing Harry Winks and soon being booked for a foul on Ben Mee, and after 65 minutes he saw his side get back on level terms.

This time home manager Sean Dyche was infuriated, claiming Danny Rose had taken a throw from the wrong place before the ball dropped to Kane, who held off the challenge of Mee before sending a low finish past Heaton.

Spurs’ Juan Foyth and Burnley’s Phil Bardsley were booked for late challenges that could arguably have brought bigger punishments, and as the game entered its final quarter of an hour, Foyth came off to be replaced by Erik Lamela.

A Burnley break almost put them back in front, Wood turning provider with a deflected cross from which McNeil’s low strike was blocked by Hugo Lloris.

McNeil and Hendrick were replaced bv Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Robbie Brady, and with seven minutes to go, Gudmondsson’s run and low cross brought the winner, Barnes tapping in at the far post.

Lamela went into the book for dissent before Spurs made their final change of the afternoon, Lucas Moura on for Son, but they were unable to salvage a point, Lamela heading a late chance straight at Heaton.
