Corruption at its peak! Mathare Hospital Senior Assistant Director Arrested Over Bribery Claims

Corruption has become the ‘order of the day’ in both government and private sections in Kenya. Should it be legalized for people to do the unexpected?

Mathare Hospital Senior Assistant Director of Medical Services, Georgina Wangui Kamunge was nabbed on Friday evening by EACC detectives.

She was arrested on allegations of bribery demands from firearm owners.

Reports reveal that Wangui is alleged to have sought bribes from firearm owners who seek psychiatric evaluation reports from Mathare Hospital.

Following the fraud acts, the owners who were going through a vetting process for licensed firearm, reported the issue to the anti-corruption body.

The agency then carried a covert operation which enabled them to record Wangui and other officials demanding for bribes.

Posting on their social media page, EACC announced: “EACC has today arrested the Senior Assistant Director of Medical Services, Mrs. Georgina Wangui Kamunge on allegations of bribery demands from firearm owners seeking psychiatric evaluation reports from Mathare Hospital during the the ongoing vetting of licensed firearm owners.

“EACC received complaints from firearm holders seeking the said evaluation reports stating that the process was marred with gross corruption. We conducted covert operations at the hospital where we obtained recordings of the bribe demands by the suspect and others,” EACC stated.

Additionally, they divulged that they officers were extorting people of an additional Ksh5000 for the test to be done and thereafter, they refused to issue receipts against the obtained number.

With the official being behind bars, and investigations ongoing, the agency had suspended the exercise at Mathare Hospital.
