Terror Suspect DTB Manager Pleads Not Guilty of Dusit Attack Involvement

A manager from Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) in Eastleigh has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the 14 Riverside attack in Nairobi.

Sophia Njoki Mbogo was on Wednesday charged with three counts failure to report suspicion of proceeds of crime, aiding and abetting terrorism and failure to report money laundering, as reported by Citizen.

Mbogo who appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi has been in police custody for 30 days.

Prosecution opposed to her release on cash bail and the application will be heard on Wednesday afternoon.

She is accused of allowing large sums of money to be transacted through her bank via MPesa.

In an affidavit however, Mbogo claimed innocence saying the bank only acts as an agent of the mobile money transfer service.

Ms Mbogo, who has worked at DTB for eight years, explained that the bank has an agreement with various Safaricom agents, to whom it releases float.

“I am an innocent bystander in this criminal inquiry and there is no nexus between me and the other five terror suspects. And further, I am a law-abiding citizen with no previous criminal record,” she said.

She was arraigned alongside six other individuals, one of whom allegedly withdrew Ksh. 9million through the same till number in different batches and then sent it to Somalia.

Other suspects include Mr Osmail who received Sh100 million via M-Pesa, which police believe was for terrorism.

And Mr Hassan, who operates a business in Nairobi’s Eastleigh, is believed to have been in constant communication with Mr Faisal Mohammed Digale, who was involved in the Garissa attack, as well as Mr Gichunge.

Al Shabaab have since claimed responsibility for the attack at 14 Riverside
and so far, 16 suspects are being held in police custody over the attack.
