Somalia,Burundi To Hold Joint Operations Against Al-Shabaab

As Kenya’s ties with Somalia held in balance following last a diplomatic tiff that prompted the Nairobi government to call back her Ambassador to Somalia and indefinitely suspending Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya over the disputed maritime boarders last weekend, Somalia acted quickly to recruit a new friend who is none other than Burundi.

At the invitation of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmajo), President of the Federal Republic of Somalia paid a working visit to the Republic of Burundi on the 18-19th of February 2019.

According to Somali’s presidency, the two heads of state held bilateral talks focused on ‘strengthening cooperation on security and expanding trade and economic partnerships’ The visit comes at a time when Burundi has been asked to withdraw up to 1,000 of its troops from Somalia. Burundi is one of the African nations that contribute troops to the United Nations and African Union funded peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

However, what the East African Community states are holding is still un clear over the past 7 months with Kenya accusing Tanzania over un fair trade policies recently, Burundi accusing Rwanda of funding perpetrators who want to topple President Pierre Nkrunziza’s un touchable government following a failed coup de tat in March 2015, in a similar manner, Rwanda and Uganda are also in a cold war where Rwandese in Uganda are allegedly detained and mistreated while Rwanda accuses Uganda for connecting with Rwanda enemies.
