Dedan Kmathi Waciuri was the senior most military and spiritual leader during the Mau Mau uprising. He is widely regarde as a revolutionary leader who led an armed military struggle against the British colonial regime in Kenya in the 1950’s until his capture in 1957.
It is on this day that Kenyans recall when he was led from condemned cells to the execution shade inside the Kamiti maximum prison where he was hanged 62 years ago.
Remembering Kenyan Dedan Kimathi who was executed by the British on this day in 1957. He led the KLFA (Mau Mau) revolution against the brutal British occupation of his country.

Journalists have obtained a confidential profile of him compiled by the Special Branch at the height of the Emergency, and which describes Kimathi as “councillor and coordinator”.
The document says Kimathi “possesse(d) a limited amount of political acumen, and is certainly more far-sighted than most gang leaders”.
He was also described as a “tireless walker normally believed to carry a 450 D/B sporting rifle. Alternates between being bearded and clean shaven.”
