Outstretched Mang’u High School threatens to burst its banks

Giant Secondary school, Mang’u High School is one school that has been outstretched by the high admission demands in the country.

For a dyed-in-the-wool school which maintained an unchanging admission at 600 students, the 1727 capacity this year seems to have gotten the school’s banks overflowing.

At 287 per cent increase, shared spaces as the bathrooms, toilets, dormitories and even learning facilities have gone far and beyond the red mark.

Huge land for expansion

But for a school that sits on an expansive 200 acres that brushes on the Thika-Nairobi highway, more questions arise why it has not considered expanding all these years.

With such a rich composition of alumni in all the right places in top government leadership, a student a capacity of less than 1,000 appears to be plain lethargic and unresponsive to the ever-dynamic education system.

Chocking in congestion

For a school that has the current CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge as its alumni, Nation Media Group and Family Bank Chairman Wilfred Kiboro among its alumni, Mang’u is grappling with acute congestion.

The school’s facilities largely remain outdate and unresponsive to the current student population.

Outstretched facilities

A class meant to accommodate 40 students now holds 60, and a dormitory that used to hold 40 now is stuffed with 100 students.

Worse hit are the bathrooms and latrines which are practically panting to manage the bursting population.

Produced exceptional leaders

Among the exceptional leaders that Mang’u churned out were retired President Mwai Kibaki, The late minister George Saitoti, Joseph Michuki, Tom Mboya and even former VP Moody Awori.

Others are Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga and former Mombasa Catholic Archbishop John Njenga, both deceased.
