Frustration as University Courses rendered “Useless”

Frustration is building up after the Commission for University Education threw out a number of courses for being “useless.”

Thousands of students now stare at massive discontinuation and lack of jobs as the reality sinks in.

According to the report, these students have been technically wasting their time on useless courses all along.

And as such, the Commission for University Education (CUE) has rejected 133 courses with a cumulative enrolment capacity of 10,000 registered students.

VCs decry move by CUE

Vice Chancellors of universities across the country have since decried the policy as drastic and not in good faith.

The university chiefs also said that such measures would only pit university students and the administration in a vicious cycle of confrontations.

“These programmes have students studying in higher classes. Why is CUE trying to set up universities against students? This is unacceptable. There are better ways of engaging universities,” said a VC on condition of anonymity.

No cause for alarm

However, CUE CEO Mwenda Ntarangwi sought to address the panic that has gripped the institutions, saying the commission is still engaging the universities whose programmes were rejected.

“This is still an ongoing process and we are in consultation with universities,” said Prof Ntarangwi.

Shock findings

The outrageous revelations emerged after the CUE audited universities last year to gauge their preparedness for the 2019 placement.

Greed in Universities

The audit also revealed how universities, in a bid to cash out, overvalued their capacity, both in resources and teaching staff.

According to the report, all the public and private universities declared available capacity of 163,925 for the various courses but after a rigorous assessment on their capacities, only 134,075 were approved.

Some 30,000 slots have been scraped from the universities over incapacity.
