Machakos Governor and Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader Alfred Mutua wants Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka to support his 2022 presidential bid.

While adressing the press in Mombasa on Sunday, Governor Mutua expressly said that he was the only leader from the Eastern region who has stated his interest in gunning for the top seat in the 2022 elections.

The outspoken Governor, who has been part of a Kivutha Kibwana-led front that has rebelled against Kalonzo, said that the Wiper leader appears to have shelved his ambition to run for the top seat.

“His proposal to remove the presidential term limit and extend that of President Kenyatta is a confirmation that he is no longer in the presidential race,” Mutua said in part.

It is claimed that, Kalonzo, while meeting with Wiper leaders in Tala, Machakos County on Saturday, February 9, voiced support for an amendment to the constituition that would see the current presidential term limit lifted.

Such an amendment, according to experts, would allow President Uhuru to seek a third term or remain in Government if he wished.

However, according to Governor Mutua, Kalonzo’s proposal will take the country back to the ‘dark days of dictatorship’ and deny younger, deserving leaders a chance to lead the country.

“The young generation need to be to inspired. People who push for the removal of presidential limits have a problem passing the baton to others because they want to cling to power forever,” Mutua explained.
