19-year old shot at her right thigh during police shoot out

One 19-year-old, Ann Wanjiku sustained injuries at her right thigh, after Kariobangi Police Officers exchanged fire with a three man gang, but was rushed at Mama Lucy Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident happened when Police Officers arrested a suspect dressed in full General Service Unit (GSU) uniform masquerading as an officer in Kariobangi, Nairobi county.

According to a police, 38-year-old Benedict Omondi Otieno was arrested while dressed in police uniform together with two other people who were terrorising members of the public.

“It was reported that the three man gang, one dressed in full GSU uniform, were terrorising members of the public by demanding money within Kisumu Ndogo area in Kariobangi,” read the police report.

Members of public alerted Kariobangi Police Station officers, who acted swiftly and when they reached at the scene, the suspects exchanged fire with police where Wanjku was shot on her thigh.

After the shoot out, the officers managed to arrest the uniformed suspect and he could not give satisfactory account of himself.

“One Ann wanjiku Wainaina aged 19 years sustained a bullet wound on her right thigh and rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital in stable condition,” the police said.

The other two managed to escape but police launched a search to ensure they are brought to book.

The suspect was held at Kariobangi Police Station for further interrogation and to be arraigned later.

Earlier reports indicated another GSU Officer who was on leave was arrested over claims of lending out firearms and his attire to criminals.

The government recently banned wearing of clothes and other items resembling that of military and police.
