President Kenyatta was today seen off at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by senior Government officials led by Deputy President William Ruto as he departed the country this afternoon for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the 32nd Heads of State and Governments Summit of the AU.

According to the Star, The Summit kicked off on January 15 and will run till February 11 under the theme “Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.

February 7 and 8 was reserved for the 34th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council (Ministerial) while the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union will be held between February 10 and 11.

Two days ago,Kenya was re-elected to the membership of the African Union Security Council in a move that has significantly boosted the country’s continental influence ahead of her bid for a non permanent seat in the UN Security Council in 2021.

The country’s re-election is a continental vote of confidence in Kenya’s competence and is expected to have positive bearing when elections to the continental body are held.

Kenya won against her northern neighbours Ethiopia and Sudan who staged a spirited campaign but lost after six rounds of voting at the ongoing 34th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council.

The African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government is one of several decision-making bodies within the African Union. The other bodies are the Pan-African Parliament; the Executive Council, consisting of foreign ministers of the AU members states; and the African Union Commission.

The President was  today accompanied by the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta who is expected in the Ethiopian capital where she will attend the 22nd Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA) meeting.
