K’Ogalo Fan Honor Late Tom Mboya Awaiting Mashemeji Derby

Today a Fan of Gor Mahia made it to Nairobi CBD to polish the Tom Mboya Statue ahead of the Mashemeji derby happening later today. While the public stared at him, the busy man continued to mind his own business of thoroughly polishing the statue. But why? it was his business and everyone else was supposed to mind theirs.

Unless you have a small history of Gor Mahia, then you cannot understand why this fan decided to do a random activity in the middle of a busy town. Have a look at how Gor Mahia was formed.

Mahia Football Club also known as K’Ogalo is a football club based in Nairobi, Kenya. They have won the Kenyan Premier League a record 16 times, three more than their arch-rivals A.F.C. Leopards and have also won the FKF President’s Cup a record 10 times. Gor Mahia is the only Kenyan team and from the CECAFA region to win an African continental title to date, having won the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987 after previously reaching the final in 1979.


Gor Mahia was formed in Tom Mboya’s house, who was a Kenyan trade unionist, educationist, Pan Africanist, author, independence activist, Cabinet Minister and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of Kenya.
In 2014 the Gor Mahia Fans were accused of destroying the Tom Mboya statue along Moi Avenue, and they were urged to respect the statue by The late Tom Mboya’s cousin Peter Odede.

Today a fan of Gor Mahia honored the statue and polished it. However, people went to Twitter to express their mixed reactions towards the act.
