Homa Bay comes to light, thanks to Awiti

The Lakeside town of Homa Bay was activity packed on Thursday evening with many dancing on the streets. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the lower courts’ decision to nullify and uphold the governor’s election and victory caused alot of jubilation from a handful of Governor Cyprian Awiti supporters. The long awaited decision was well received by many.

The Supreme Court judges faulted High Court and Court of appeal for ignoring a report on scrutiny and recount of votes that put Mr Awiti ahead of his political rival Oyugi Magwanga.

The supporters celebrated and danced in the evening rain as those of former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga expressed disappointment over the ruling. During the celebrations conducted at Posta Grounds, supporters urged the governor to unite the county currently confronted by several problematic court battles and leadership fights.

“As the head of the county, the governor should find solutions to the ongoing cases about his chief officers, the Public Service Board and that of County Assembly Speaker,” Mr Ely Oyier said. He said projects in the county had stalled because of numerous conflicts in different departments.

Mr Oyier argued that the poor performance by the county could have been promoted by the court case the governor was facing. Mr Opere Onimo, another resident, said a by-election would have heightened political temperatures in the county.

“Supporters of both the governor and his opponent, Mr Magwanga, were divided over political differences. A mini poll would have reignited the division further,” Mr Onimo said. Mr Magwanga’s supporters on the other hand called for a restructure of the cabinet.

Mr Michael Ogalo proposed that the governor should send home some of his executive members who have performed poorly so far as well as the dismissal of corrupt officials.
