Body pulled from plane wreckage feared to be Cardiff City’s record signing Emiliano Sala’s

28 year old Argentine striker Emiliano Sala and 59-year-old Brit pilot Dave Ibbotson were flying in the single-turbine aircraft from Nantes, in northern France, to Cardiff in Wales, when it mysteriously disappeared near the Channel Islands on January 21.

After saying farewell to his former teammates in France, the striker was heading to the Welsh capital when the aircraft disappeared. Sala had recently signed with English Premier League club Cardiff City for a reported £15 million ($19.3 million) from French club Nantes.

UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed that a body had been seen in the wreckage of the plane which was carrying missing footballer Emiliano Sala. They released a grainy image showing a part of the fuselage with the aircraft registration. Rescue crews searched for hours, across three days, and covered around 1,700sq. miles before calling off their hunt on January 24. Sala’s family, however, launched a crowd-funding campaign for a private search, which raised over 300,000 euros.

It is understood ice on the wings is the likely reason behind the plane going down. Text messages to his friends show him expressing fear for his life.

“Boys, I’m here on top of the plane that looks like it’s about to fall apart. And I’m going to Cardiff, crazy, tomorrow we already started. In the afternoon we started to train, boys, in my new team.”

He later sent another message saying: “If you do not have any more news from in an hour and a half, I don’t know if they need to send someone to find me… I am getting scared!”

The pilot’s body is still missing and unaccounted for. Tributes have flooded in to Sala in both in the UK, France and Argentina. Meanwhile the French club are now demanding payment from Cardiff over the Argentinian’s transfer fee.
