How Chelsea could decide who wins the English Premier League this season

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool have dropped points in the past two games

As the last fortnight has proved, the idea of an easy run-in isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Few could have predicted that Liverpool would have seen their lead at the top trimmed by draws against West Ham United and Leicester City.

A win for Manchester City tonight would see them leapfrog Liverpool to lead the league and as Pep Guardiola suggested yesterday, the title race could go down to the final day and be decided by goal difference.

Thoughts inevitably turn to who plays who in the remaining weeks of the season and there’s one team which could have the biggest say on who lifts the title. That team is Chelsea – a bogey team for both Liverpool and City in the past six years.

City’s win percentage against Chelsea is 36.4 – the lowest of any of teams they still have to play. The same stat is the same for Liverpool. Their win percentage against Chelsea is 18.2 – by far the lowest of their future opponents. Their record against Manchester United – who they face on February 24 – should also be cause for concern. At only 27.3%, United appear to represent their toughest remaining away game.

Despite starting the season like a train, Chelsea have faltered in recent weeks with Maurizio Sarri coming under increasing pressure.

At the other end of the spectrum, City have not lost in six years against four teams – Bournemouth, Watford, Fulham and Brighton – that they still have to play.

Likewise, Liverpool have to play four teams against whom they have 100% winning records. Those are Fulham, Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Wolves.
