Manchester United defender Ashley Young is expected to sign a new one-year contract within the next few days.

Sky Sports News reports that the veteran player, 34, will put pen-to-paper and extend his stay at Old Trafford, having first arrived back in 2011 from Aston Villa for £17million.

In that time Young has lifted the Premier League title, FA Cup, Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield, scoring 17 goals in 227 matches for the Red Devils.

Young, whose new deal could be worth £110,000 a week, has made 25 appearances for United this season in all competitions, featuring in nine of the 10 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – only missing the 2-0 victory at Newcastle.

It’s fair to say the reaction to the news has been somewhat mixed, with a minority of fans backing the decision to hand Young a new deal as his leadership qualities are good for the dressing room.

Lads you can’t buy Ashley young voice in the changing room. Serial trophy winner. Good move (@TheRealTris)

Not surprising. He’s been an important player at right back this season. Good to have an experienced hand onboard while they ease in the teenager Dalot. (@PaulDHeenan_)

Good move by the club , he’s great squad player. (@privilege_mufc)

However, many supporters have been left deflated, angered even, by the reports.

So they say they want to strengthen the squad but then we extend this jokers contract?  (@ForzaFerrari15)

can’t believe the amount of absolute idiots tweeting you saying Ashley Young is good Jesus Christ we are a joke of a club! (@Mutley15)

United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches when they travel down to the capital this weekend. Solskjaer’s troops face Fulham at Craven Cottage knowing that a win would propel them into the top-four, for 24 hours at least, with Chelsea in action the following afternoon away to Man City.
