Forget Watford and Crystal Palace, Derby County are the real FA Cup dark horses this season

Introducing: The FA Cup dark horses, Derby County

Following the eliminations of Arsenal and Tottenham in the fourth round, things could be about to get very interesting in this season’s FA Cup.

The Premier League giants join Liverpool out of the competition, while one of Chelsea or Manchester United will head down the same path with the two sides set to play each other at Stamford Bridge in the fifth round.

That would leave just the Blues or the Red Devils and Manchester City, should they progress as expected, as the only two Premier League powerhouses in the quarter-finals, which could help pave the way for a side like Derby County to do something special.

The likes of Watford and Crystal Palace, of course, also now have an increased chance of going far in the competition when taking everything into account.

But looking at their track record this season, Derby could be the real dark horses. Against Premier League opposition, the Rams have been immense under Frank Lampard.

They knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup third round before running Chelsea close in a 3-2 defeat in the following round of the competition at the Bridge.

Meanwhile, in the FA Cup, they recently eliminated Southampton after two 2-2 draws and a penalty shoot-out.

In all of those encounters, Derby played with a fearlessness and in an offensive manner, the way to arguably go in knockout competitions.

If they can stick to that, with a bit of luck, there is no reason why a trip to Wembley cannot be on the cards, especially with so many of the Premier League big boys dropping like dead flies.
