CATs for the Police? New examinations Introduced.

All police officers across the country are set to undertake new examinations following the activation of the National Police Service (NPS) Examination Board.

The board will ensure uniform standards and impeccable integrity in the conduct of examinations in the NPS in order to obtain valid and reliable results on the levels of competencies officers possess in various aspects of service delivery.

Speaking at the Kenya School of Government – Lower Kabete on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet  said that the move was in line with the NPS commitment to work concertedly with all relevant agencies in order to enhance policing services in the Country.

“Members of the police service must be continuously evaluated to assess and increase their proficiency in service delivery to members of the public,” the police boss said.

He further indicated that the development of the NPS Examination Policy and Guidelines is an important milestone in professionalizing the NPS.

“The NPS Examination Policy makes explicit the commitment of the NPS to enhance the competencies of its workforce.

“Therefore, the role of uniform procedures and standards for examining and certification of officers in the Service, as well as, a structure to align their qualifications to the national requirements cannot be gainsaid,” the police boss added.

The NPS equally underscored the importance of the new Examination Policy and Guidelines in the administration and management of examinations within the service.

“It is intended to ensure that assessment procedures and practices bring out specified learning outcomes in our training system.

“We are certain that this Policy and Guidelines will play a central role in ensuring that examinations in the NPS are fair, valid and ethical,” the police added.

The new system endeavors to develop a highly competent workforce that will positively contribute to the provision of sustainable peace and tranquility to all people in Kenya.

“We are certain that this Policy Guidelines accords the Service the needed framework for the effective assessment of officers’ competencies, evaluation of the training system, placement of officers to various duties and responsibilities and guaranteeing fairness in career progression and national certification,” Boinet noted.
