Why Kenyans’ Preference for Tea over Coffee is bizarre

Some of the latest news claim that bacteria is responsible for making coffee taste better. However, what still surprise me is Kenyans love for tea aka chai over their awesome coffee. Why am I surprised? Because if you ask a whiteman from Europe they will tell you they recognise our coffee as one of the best in the world.

Apart from the Blue Mountain Coffee from Jamaica, I can’t think of another coffee that smells good and receive love from all over world like ours. Yes, our tea is equally of great quality but coffee is just something else. And yet if you hang out with many Kenyans they would rarely go for coffee. Actually, it is only Nairobians who tend to do coffee. And this is mostly in dates.

Many Kenyan homes shop for tea leaves at the end of the month more than they do coffee. The only explanation I can have for this is that we are not in a cold weather country. I think coffee is meant for cold weather countries. Otherwise I am yet to get a better reason.

I have been trying to fall in love with coffee but it is yet to hook me up. I still snub it when I see it on any café menu. Tea on the other hand is bae. Whenever I call a Kenyan friend at around 6 pm, if he is at home, he would usually tell me he is on some tea and bread. I long for the day I would call and someone would tell me they are on Kenyan coffee.

All in all, a normal Kenyan grew up on tea, we only learnt of coffee in school as an export product. For a long time, I thought it is a white man’s thing. But it is our thing so let me go for coffee.
