Mobile money transfer outlets have lost millions of shillings to a gang of fraudsters targeting ill-trained agents.
However a woman who has been operating an M-pesa agent has shocked Kenyans with how she survived fraudsters tricks with fake currency.
Here is her story:
MPESA AGENTS nimeona leo maneno.So my kid siz opened an mpesa shop last week..What are sisters for(helping each other)so today n yesterday i was the one operating.This woman walks in.Habari madam?i respond.she asks if i can deposit 51k to airtel line.i told her no i dont know i only operate with safaricom.she then said sawa nitumie tu kwa line yangu ya safcom.She gave me 51 original nikamsho anipe id when I was depositing akanisho niache tu.During that process two ladies walk in sasa madam ..uko na bamba 20 ?i respond yes,She hands 20 bob coin n tells me to scratch it.After scratching i hand the scratch card to her ..as am handing over the scratch card the lady with 51k comes back “Madam niekee tu hio pesa kwa simu I again tell her sawa leta na unipe I’d. she gave me fake 51k as I take the fake cash the 3rd madam tells me unaeza nipa bamba 20 uniekee kwa simu sioni nambas vizuri macho yangu ni mbaya.I scratch another bamba 20 and hands it over to her telling her to tell the lady she is with amusaidie kueka kwa simu. I now start recheking the 51k so that i deposit niko na id ..My people 1,2,3,4 kabla nifike hata 5 nikamwaga pesa kwa counter Fake cash.The lady is missing the two ladies wa scratchcards wanasema amekimbilia huku.so I guess when she left for the 1 Min n came back alilkua Ana swap original to fake kuniconfuse so that when I take the cash she knew I will not recheck .lakini me ni nani?
Be aware of conwomen/man ..I have never sewn this before but hope it helps someone.They come to confuse you !Kindly counter check cash every time one wants to deposit.51k ingeenda hivyo ningekua mgeni wa nani aki.
