Manchester United’s quest for a solid centre-back seems to have hit yet another stumbling block after reports from Spain indicate that Atletico Madrid and Diego Godin have both rejected fresh approaches from the Red Devils for the defender.

Godin, a stalwart of Los Rojiblancos since 2010, is out of contract in the Spanish capital in the summer and Manchester United are long-term admirers of the Uruguayan, having made a last-ditch attempt to bring him to Old Trafford last summer.

The Atletico skipper, however, is ‘unimpressed’ by the deal United and chief executive Edward Woodward are currently offering, which amounts to a two-year £8.6m (€9.6m) deal, down from the £6.3m (€7m) a season they previously offered (Tutto Mercato Web).

United however have gone some way to rectify a questionable defence – mainly due to the ever-improving Victor Lindelof – by producing back-to-back clean sheets against Newcastle United and Reading.

Godin is universally regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the game. With Atletico he has been instrumental in their 2014 La Liga triumph, and has been runner-up twice (both to city rivals Real) in the Champions League. He also has a Copa del Rey to his name.

It is believed the 32-year-old is an opting for a move to Serie A to join Luciano Spalletti’s Internazionale.

Manchester United next take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium in the Premier League, holding to close the gap further on the top four after a resurgence under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Atletico meanwhile sit in second in La Liga behind Barcelona. Their next fixture is against Girona away in the Copa del Rey.
