Arsenal and Mancity fans missing in greatest Premier League team debate

Image result for arsenal and mancityIt’s a tedious debate that rears its head every day on social media: who were the greatest Premier League side of all-time? Two names have cropped up a lot in recent months: Arsenal’s Invincibles and Man City’s Centurions. Both amazing teams in their own right.

Arsenal, after all, are the only team to ever go a whole season unbeaten in the Premier League; City, meanwhile, are the only team to reach 100 points after smashing 11 records on their way to the title last season. Both phenomenal achievements.

But what about United? Sir Alex Ferguson lifted the Premier League trophy on 13 occasions and built. at least. three great teams in 1994, 1999 and 2008.

Two of those sides were among the finest English football has ever seen – and also went on to triumph in Europe. Yet, bizarrely, they appear to have been wiped from the record books on social media. Those comebacks, the Class of 92, Roy Keane’s leadership, the solidity at the back with Vidic/Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals…

What about the sides who retained it? Won it three times on the bounce? Won it with the Champions League? Won it with the Champions League & FA Cup?’

The Premier League title race went down to the wire in 1999 and 2008 but United held their nerve and still marched on to European glory. That is some effort.

Those ’99 treble winners never knew when they were beat as Jesper Blomqvist recalls.

“I think there is something in the way believe we had where losing 2-0 against Juventus or one-man down against Arsenal we still had the belief that we would still win all the matches,” he previously told MEN Sport.

“That belief was really special that year. It takes time. Not that you’re invincible but that you can win the game if you give it everything. We worked on it that whole season. Of course you need a little bit of luck but if you believed enough and worked so hard you could have that extra bit of luck.”

These players set such high standards at the training ground that the after-effects were still felt nine years later – Wes Brown, one of the few survivors from ’99, will tell you as much.

Sir Alex’s side won the Premier League and Champions League in 2008 and it says it all that choosing between that team and the treble winners really makes United fans think.

It should be a similar story when it comes to selecting the greatest ever side in Premier League history.
